How to Spot a Confident Swimmer

At SafelySwim, we know that confidence in the water is key to becoming a strong, safe swimmer. As students progress through our Learn to Swim programme, it’s valuable for parents to recognise the traits of a confident swimmer.

Here’s a deeper look into what defines a confident and competent swimmer and why completing our programme up to Stage 5 is essential.

Relaxed Body Language in the Water: Confident swimmers are at ease, floating and gliding comfortably with controlled movements and calm expressions.

Consistent and Strong Movements: Watch for smooth, powerful kicking and arm movements that keep them moving efficiently. This type of control is a hallmark of students in our Stage 5 classes and above.

Mastered Breathing Techniques: A confident swimmer breathes without hesitation, coordinating their breath with their strokes. They don’t panic when splashed or when needing to change directions.

Stamina and Endurance: Completing lengths without tiring shows the development of essential swimming stamina, a key milestone by Stage 5.

Proficiency in Multiple Strokes: A swimmer who can switch between different strokes, such as front crawl, backstroke, and breaststroke, showcases their growing confidence and versatility.

Why Complete Stage 5 Before Stopping Lessons?

Stopping lessons too soon can lead to regression. Children’s physical growth affects their swimming technique and balance, so regular lessons help maintain and develop their skills as they grow.

Completing Stage 5 ensures they have the endurance, skills, and lifesaving knowledge needed to stay safe. Most swimmers choose to continue to Stages 6/7 or even join White Cliffs Swimming Club for competitive opportunities.
